Part XVI: Things Not to Do

Sometimes LinkShare DRM Isn't Necessary (Or Shouldn't Be Used)

  • LinkShare DRM links should not be promoted to affiliates for use in e-mails. It is a web placement only tool.
Affiliate's linking code for LinkShare DRM s uses a script tag (i.e. <script src="...">). This is what allows the link to be dynamic. The script tag calls a file, which contains the code for the link, which is then executed by the browser. The script location never changes, and so the linking code never needs to be updated.

Many e-mail programs, whether online or PC-based, have a default setting to disable scripts from executing due to security risks from pernicious scripts (i.e. viruses). The program will not necessarily discern between "good" or "bad" scripts, but rather deny all scripts from executing. Firewalls may also prevent all scripts from executing in browsers or emails. Thus, the LinkShare DRM link will not display in the e-mail, since it relies on a script tag. Instead, the "noscript" portion of the link will be used, which is simply a banner from your image inventory.

Following this logic, providing a sample link in your affiliate newsletters for a LinkShare DRM link is not a good idea, since the link might not display. You can provide the linking code, as well as a link to a web page featuring that link. Alternatively, you can post samples right on your customized Create Links page.

LinkShare DRM links' "noscript" portion will display if the script is disabled. The noscript portion will serve a banner from your inventory of LinkShare hosted banners. If you'd prefer that affiliates only utilize the "script" portion, you might wish to traffic only the script portion when emailing linking code. Thus, you'd remove the entire code from <noscript> to the </noscript> tag.

  • Don't limit your links to only Dynamic Rich Media links.
Dynamic links will undoubtedly serve a specific merchandising purpose, and so will other links in your inventory. Affiliates will utilize various links for distinct purposes within a specific context and won't always want a link to change. For example, an affiliate site focused on MP3 players might feature a page for each player with ratings and links to that product. However, if you only offered dynamic top selling product links, the affiliate won't be able to use your links, since the product and landing page might change.
